Roses are my favourite flowers. They’re lovely, sweet, and pure. They represent many things, but to me they symbolise a love for life.
In fact, many of my favourite poems are about roses, including this absolutely delightful one by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, entitled A Dead Rose, a few lines of which I have included here.
…
The heart doth recognise thee,
Alone, alone! The heart doth smell thee sweet,
Doth view thee fair, doth judge thee most complete,…
Though about a rose after its life has seeped away, it reminds me that everything has a vitality that blooms and disappears. And that when you stop to smell the roses, you breathe in vitality that rejuvenates and refreshes.
And a red rose? Well, there’s precious few in my garden, but when they bloom, they’re large and deeply coloured, and I have to shoot them quickly. How short life is!?
So a lady in red is sophisticated, yet humble; intelligent, yet thoughtful; strong, yet feminine.
